Whelk Processing Line
These pieces of equipment process cooked whelk in the shell to
produce graded whelk meats. The cooked whelks are emptied into
the feed conveyor and transported by conveyor to the whelk
cracker where the shell is broken away from the meat. The shell
and meat drop onto the meat shell separator to separate the
meat, shell and gut. The meats then drop into the brine
separator which uses a brine solution to remove small pieces of
shell. A conveyor in the brine separator transfers the meats to
a rotary washer for cleaning. After cleaning the meats pass over
an inspection conveyor and then onto a vibratory grader which
sizes the whelk meat into four grades. The equipment is
fabricated from 316 grade stainless steel. The drives are TEFC
gearmotors with variable frequency controller switches. All
conveyors are supplied with food grade plastic modular belt.
The Whelk Processing System consists of a feed conveyor, a shell cracker, a meat shell separator, a brine separator, a rotary washer, an inspection conveyor, and a vibratory size grader.
